Red Mummies:

To create the red mummies (around 2,500 – 2,000 B.C.), they made incisions in the abdomen, shoulder, groin and ankles in order to remove the organs and muscle tissue; then dried the cavities. They then proceeded to introduce pieces of wood lengthwise to reinforce the body. The cavities were filled with earth, feathers and clay. Once the brain was removed, they refilled the head and adorned it with a long black wig held by a manganese oxide skullcap and the eyes, mouth and nose were delineated, as if the person were alive. Finally, they sewed up the incisions and gave a finishing touch of paint to the body, except for the face, with ferric oxide, leaving the mummy with a striking red body and black face. Also around this time, some mummies were found covered in mud.
